Typica

Typica

Typical Cup Profile

Typica offers one of the most elegant and refined "classic" cups. It is clean, sweet, and delicately acidic, with a light, silky body. Its flavour profile typically highlights white floral aromas, gentle fruit notes, and subtle hints of toasted nuts or sweet chocolate, depending on the terroir.

It is precisely this purity and transparent cup quality that keeps Typica highly valued among specialty coffee roasters. Despite lower agricultural yields compared to modern hybrids, Typica expresses its growing region and processing method with remarkable fidelity and clarity.

Genetic Origin & History

Along with Bourbon, Typica is one of the two foundational genetic pillars of cultivated Arabica coffee. It serves as the direct ancestor to many famous modern varieties, including Caturra, Mundo Novo, Maragogipe, and Geisha.

Typica’s journey began in the wild high-altitude forests of southwestern Ethiopia. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, seeds migrated to Yemen, initiating commercial coffee cultivation in the region. During the colonial era, Dutch and French trade routes carried Typica seeds from Yemen to India, Java, and eventually across the Americas, reaching Brazil in the 1720s before spreading to Jamaica, Hawaii, and Central America.

Because of its low yield, roughly 20% to 30% lower than Bourbon, and high susceptibility to major diseases like coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix), many farmers have transitioned to more resistant varieties. However, Typica remains the genetic foundation and taste benchmark for world-renowned origins such as Jamaica Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona.
